Last update :

Located just about 10 minutes by car from Miyako Airport, Miyakojima City Tropical Botanical Garden is a lush facility that takes advantage of the island’s subtropical coastal climate, featuring plants native to Okinawa’s many islands.

Spread across an expansive site of 120,000 tsubo (about 40 hectares), the garden is home to around 1,600 species of subtropical trees, with flowers blooming throughout the year. Visitors can admire iconic Okinawan plants such as coral trees (deigo), banyan trees (gajumaru), and floss-silk trees (tokkurikiwata). In spring, the 400-meter-long row of coral trees bursts into red blossoms, creating a spectacular floral tunnel. Another highlight is the “Flower Kingdom” area, designed by renowned garden designer Kazuyuki Ishihara, where beautifully arranged plantings can be enjoyed.

Beyond observing seasonal flowers and trees, guests can stroll along walking paths, climb observation decks, or visit the Miyakojima Craft Village, where hands-on experiences such as making shima-zōri sandals or pottery are available. The garden offers multiple ways to enjoy Okinawa’s natural and cultural charm.
