Listed in the Engishiki Jinmyōchō, a Heian-period record of shrines across Japan, Wakeoe Shrine is a historic shrine with deep roots and a long-standing legacy. It has long been revered by prominent warrior clans, including the Oda, Tokugawa, and Toyotomi.
Within the shrine grounds, naturally growing sacred pines-such as the Mitsuba Pine and Ryujin Pine, symbols of prosperity-are said to bring blessings for business success and the flourishing of one’s family, drawing many worshippers throughout the year. The shrine’s subsidiary Hachiman Shrine is also known as a deity of safe childbirth. Another highlight not to miss is a stone bridge associated with Kato Kiyomasa, famed as a master castle builder.

In recent years, the shrine has also gained popularity as an “Instagrammable shrine.” Seasonal displays change monthly, with ornate decorations at the main entrance and the purification pavilion (temizuya) drawing visitors as favorite photo spots. The shrine is equally well known for its vibrant, art-inspired goshuin (temple/shrine stamps), which also change month by month. Options include clear-style and intricate paper-cut designs, and visitors can receive a special Birthday Festival Goshuin during their birth month.

Every October, the shrine holds its annual grand festival, featuring traditional Shinto rites such as a mikoshi procession and kagura performances. Numerous food stalls also line the area, creating a lively atmosphere enjoyed by both locals and tourists.
