Okayama Electric Tramway (Streetcar)
Affectionately known as “Okaden,” this streetcar system has been running through Okayama City for over 100 years.
Okayama Electric Tramway, affectionately known as “Okaden,” is a streetcar system that has been operating in Okayama City for more than a century, having first begun service in the Meiji era. It continues to connect key areas of the city today and is widely used not only for commuting and school travel, but also as a convenient way to reach major sightseeing spots such as Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden.
The network consists of two lines-the Higashiyama Line and the Seikibashi Line-both starting from Okayama Station and extending to different parts of the city. Fares are a flat rate across all sections, and a one-day pass makes getting around even easier. The system also accepts IC cards, and its rear-boarding, front-exit setup allows for smooth passenger flow.
The rolling stock is another highlight, featuring a diverse lineup that includes the fully low-floor MOMO (Series 9200) and the refurbished KURO (Series 3000). Special themed trains are also in operation, such as the Okaden Chuggington Train created in collaboration with the popular children’s animation. As a result, Okaden serves not only as everyday public transport, but also as an attraction in its own right for visitors to Okayama.
