Sakawa Toy Museum
Have fun learning through play in a space filled with the warmth of wood.
This interactive museum lets parents and children experience the ideas of learning through wood and learning through plants through exhibits and play equipment centered on wooden toys. The interior makes generous use of timber from Kochi Prefecture and Sakawa Town, creating a space filled with the warmth of wood. A dome inspired by the town’s mountain ranges, a wooden egg pool, and bamboo blocks stimulate children’s creativity and senses. There is also a dedicated space for children ages 0 to 2 called the “Baby Wood Education Plaza,” as well as the “Good Toy Area” with quality toys and games, making it enjoyable for a wide range of ages.
Another highlight is the chance to experience local culture and nature, with corners where children can enjoy pretend play with Kochi-specific farm products and “country sushi.” Sakawa Town is known as the birthplace of Tomitaro Makino, known as the father of Japanese botany, and the museum also features Makino-themed spaces such as “Makino-san’s Flower Field,” where children can play with flower-themed toys.
The museum is located on the grounds of “Makino-san no Michi-no-Eki Sakawa,” and it is well worth visiting both together. At the roadside station, you can shop for fresh locally grown vegetables and processed foods made with local ingredients.
