During autumn when the leaves turn red, I avoided the crowds and hiked up and down instead of taking the cable car. The scenery along the way was amazing.

Mount Takao is really close to Tokyo. Just take the Keio Line to the last stop, Takaosanguchi Station, and from there you can either hike up or take the cable car.

The cable car makes it really easy to go up and down the mountain. You can visit the shrine, eat, drink, and just have a great day.

The cable car only goes halfway up, so if you want to reach the top, you'll still need to hike. Comfortable clothing is a must.

The summit is only about 600 meters high, but you get to see the Kanto region on one side and Mt. Fuji on the other. On clear days, the views are amazing! Getting there is easy too—you can just take the cable car up and enjoy a relaxing climb.
