What is Hiroshima Station Like?

JR Hiroshima Station serves as the main gateway when arriving by train.
It can be reached from Hiroshima Airport, which also handles international flights, in Approx. 1 hour by bus.
Located in Hiroshima City, home to popular sightseeing spots such as the Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Park, it is a terminal station you are likely to visit during your trip to Hiroshima. The following six lines serve the station.

A new station building opened on March 24, 2025.
With a wide variety of restaurants and shops gathered there, the area around the station has become an even better place to enjoy food and shopping.
Around summer 2025, the Ekimae Ohashi tram line is scheduled to open, and streetcars are expected to begin entering the second floor of the station building.
This is expected to make transfers between JR lines and streetcars smoother on the same floor, improving convenience.
Development around the south exit of Hiroshima Station is also planned after summer 2025, so the area is likely to become even more convenient and appealing.

minamoa, the Commercial Complex Directly Connected to the South Side of Hiroshima Station

If you are visiting Hiroshima Station, be sure to stop by minamoa, the commercial complex in the new station building directly connected to the station’s south side.
The south-side station building is made up of minamoa from the basement first floor to the ninth floor, with a hotel occupying the ninth through 21st floors.
minamoa has around 220 restaurants, shops, and other stores, including many making their first appearance not only in Hiroshima, but also in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions.
On the second floor, there are ticket gates for Hiroshima Station and entrances connected to the north-south free passage, making access from the station excellent.
There is also plenty to see, including an open terrace overlooking the streetcar platforms and a wood-deck plaza with sweeping views of Hiroshima. Another nice point is that there is a café on every floor.

From the basement first floor to the fifth floor, minamoa is mainly dedicated to shopping, with stores across a wide range of categories including souvenir shops, drugstores, fashion, cosmetics, and miscellaneous goods.
The third-floor Gangi Terrace and the fourth-floor Ice Break Zone, where you can take a break while looking down over the atrium space where streetcars enter, are also highlights.

7F: A Floor Where You Can Relax While Taking In Panoramic Views of Hiroshima City

The seventh floor features the open-air Wood Deck Plaza, an open outdoor space with panoramic views of the cityscape around Hiroshima Station.
At Caf & Buffet Umishima Dining, facing the plaza, you can spend a pleasant time enjoying dishes made with fresh ingredients from the Setouchi area.
This floor also includes a cinema complex and the lobby of Hotel Granvia Hiroshima South Gate.

Connected to the seventh floor by the Grand Staircase, Soramore Plaza is an open outdoor area of Approx. 4,000 square meters, made up of a multipurpose court, lawn space, terrace space, and greenery and relaxation areas.
One of the biggest highlights is Gyarados Plaza by Pokémon Center Hiroshima.

On the opposite side of minamoa, the north exit of Hiroshima Station is directly connected to the commercial complex ekie Hiroshima Station.

An okonomiyaki theme park located on the sixth floor of the Hiroshima Full Focus Building, Approx. 3 minutes on foot from the south exit of JR Hiroshima Station.

2. Ekinishi

Ekinishi is a dining district spreading through Osugacho in Minami Ward, Hiroshima City, on the west side of Hiroshima Station.
About 40 restaurants line the area, offering a wide range of genres including Hiroshima specialties such as okonomiyaki and oyster dishes, as well as Thai food and French cuisine.
It is an area where you can enjoy eating as you walk and bar hopping between bars and izakaya.

3. Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum

Opened in 1968 as the first public art museum in the Chugoku region.
In 1996, it was expanded and newly built on the former site of the Hiroshima Prefectural Library, and now houses more than 5,000 works, including art related to Hiroshima, Japanese and Asian craftworks, and works from the 1920s and 1930s.
Inside, you will find an impressive collection including Salvador Dalí’s Dream of Venus and works by Ikuo Hirayama, a painter from Hiroshima.

4. Shukkeien Garden

Shukkeien Garden was built as a villa garden for Asano Nagaakira, lord of the Hiroshima Domain, starting in Genna 6 (1620).
In Takuei-chi Pond at the center of the garden float islands called Tsuru-jima and Kame-jima, created with wishes for long life. The pond is brackish water, a mix of fresh and seawater, and is home to fish such as mullet that live in seawater. Wild birds also come to prey on them.
Around the pond, teahouses, small pavilions, mountains, rivers, and islands are skillfully arranged, creating a stroll garden that can be toured along its pathways.

5. Hiroshima Castle

Hiroshima Castle is located Approx. 10 minutes on foot farther on from Shukkeien Garden.
It was built in 1589 by Mori Terumoto, known as one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s Council of Five Elders.
Located in central Hiroshima City, it is famous as a major sightseeing spot with convenient access.
The castle tower serves as an exhibition space displaying items such as Japanese swords and armor, and from the top-floor observation deck you can look out over the city of Hiroshima.
Buildings such as the Omotegomon Gate and Taiko Yagura Turret, which were destroyed by the atomic bombing, were restored in the 1990s, and their beautiful appearance can now be seen.
