*The Miyagi Museum of Art is currently closed for extensive renovations, with a planned reopening in 2025.

This art museum stands by the Hirose River which runs through Sendai City. It consists of the main hall and the Sato Churyo (a sculptor from Miyagi) Memorial Hall to the west. The main hall was designed by Kunio Maekawa, a master of modernist architecture.

There are many pieces related to Miyagi and Tohoku Region from the Meiji Period and later, as well as the work of famous artists such as Ryusei Kishida and Yuichi Takahashi. They feature many original drawings from the early days of the Guri and Gura series in the monthly children’s book Kodomo no Tomo.

They also curate work from overseas, especially of German modern artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. The premises has a sculpture garden to stroll around. Relax in appreciation of the arts.
