Lake Tazawa
The lake boasts the deepest water in Japan with a beautiful cobalt blue surface.
Lake Tazawa is the deepest lake in Japan at 423.4m deep.
The lake, with its breathtakingly beautiful cobalt blue surface, is a scenic spot in Akita Prefecture, selected as one of the 100 most scenic spots in Japan.
In 2022, the moon rising over Lake Tazawa will be recognized as one of Japan's 100 Most Beautiful Moons, adding even more charm to the lake.
The lake's surface, which reflects the color of the sky at different times of the day, is a sight worth seeing, with its deep red in the evening and purple at sunset.
The lakeside, with a circumference of about 20 km, is dotted with historic sites and historic ruins.
The most famous of these is the golden Statue of Tatsuko, which was created based on the legend of Princess Tatsuko that has been handed down in Lake Tazawa since ancient times.
The Gozanoishi Shrine, with its 450-year-old sacred tree and the "Sacred fountain of Katakashira" where Tatsuko is said to have turned into a dragon after drinking from it, is also a must-see spot.
The beautiful contrast between the red torii gate and the cobalt blue of the lake is well worth seeing.
It is also recommended to take a bus on the Lake Tazawa Round-the-Lake Route, which stops at tourist spots for a certain period of time.
There is also a sightseeing boat that takes about 40 minutes to go around the lake, so enjoy the scenery from the lake.
