Shirakami Sanchi
The World Heritage with an undisturbed primitive forest.
This vast mountainous area covers nearly 13 hectares over northwestern Akita and southwestern Aomori, which has rarely been affected by humans since ancient times. The world’s largest primitive beech forest hosts various native wildlife. The valuable ecosystem was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1993.
The World Heritage Site is divided into the Core Area with excellent plant life hardly affected by human activities and the surrounding Buffer Area. The Core Area on the Aomori side can be accessed through the existing trails and 27 designated routes. If you use the designated routes, an application for climbing is required.
There are also many scenic spots which do not require an application such as Anmon Falls, Lakes of Juniko and Takakura Woods Trail. The Shirakami Sanchi Visitor Center in Nishimeya Village, Aomori has a display hall which shows the trekking courses, the ecosystem of Shirakami Sanchi, and the beech forest’s structure. It is a gateway to the charms of the Shirakami Mountains.
