The concept of this museum is "to breathe with art in the forests of Karuizawa" and "to live in harmony with nature." After opening in 1962 in Takanawa, Tokyo as the Takanawa Museum of Art, the museum moved to Karuizawa in 1981 and changed its name to the current "Sezon Museum of Modern Art" in 1991 to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

The collection has about 800 works, ranging from works by world masters representing the 20th century, such as Andy Warhol and Sam Francis, to works by active young artists. The museum also holds special exhibitions twice a year, allowing visitors to encounter works of art that match the theme of the exhibition.

The artworks are also scattered throughout the nature-rich kaiyushiki garden, where visitors can relax and enjoy the art while listening to the murmuring of the river. (Only museum or café visitors are allowed to enter the garden.)

In addition, there is also "Cafe Yamaarashi" with a selection of books related to Saison culture and the arts. We also recommend that you enjoy reading a book with a simple meal prepared with locally grown organic seasonal ingredients under the theme of "Be Careful with Nature and Grateful to the Earth.
