Completed in 1957 (Showa 32), Lake Okutama is a man-made lake created by damming the upper reaches of the Tama River with the Ogouchi Dam. Its official name is "Ogouchi Reservoir". With a total storage capacity of approximately 180 million tons, it supplies about 20% of the water used by Tokyo citizens, and as a reservoir dedicated to water supply, it boasts one of the largest in Japan and is a valuable water source for Tokyo.

The area is so rich in nature that it's hard to believe it's within Tokyo, and the entire area has been designated as Chichibu Tama Kai National Park. The different natural landscapes of each season such as cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowscapes in winter, along with the serene lake surface, make for incredibly beautiful views.

It's fun just to drive along the national road that stretches along the north shore of the lake, but it's recommended to take your time and walk around. On the lake surface, there is a pedestrian-only floating bridge made of square, drum-like resin called the "Drum Can Bridge", where you can enjoy a walk on the water while looking at the natural scenery reflected like a mirror on the lake surface.

In addition, at the "Okutama Water and Green Contact Center", they introduce the nature, history, folklore, and details of the dam in Okutama through exhibits and videos. You also can't miss the limited daily 20 servings of their specialty menu, "Ogouchi Dam Curry", which also recreates the Drum Can Bridge, at the restaurant in the center.
