Lake Tokura, the birthplace of the "Hanagasa Dance" - one of the four major festivals of Tohoku and representing Yamagata - is an artificial lake constructed in the Taisho era. It is believed that the "Hanagasa Dance" originated from the songs sung during the construction of the lake, which was selected in 2010 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries as one of the "Top 100 Reservoirs."

With an area of about 230 hectares, Lake Tokura is home to freshwater fish. In the winter, swans visit as a wintering ground, adding to the area's rich natural appeal. Especially in spring, around 200 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom along the lake, making it a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing. The reflection of cherry blossoms on the lake is beautiful, and every May, the "Lake Tokura Festival" is held, allowing visitors to enjoy the festival and cherry blossoms. A lakeside walk to enjoy the view of the lake and cherry blossoms is recommended.

Additionally, the surroundings of Lake Tokura feature facilities like a campground, a "Children's Plaza" with playground equipment, a day-trip hot spring, and a ground golf course. It's a perfect place to relax surrounded by nature.
