Lake Shikotsu Wild Bird Forest

A lakeside forest of towering trees where you can encounter many kinds of wild birds.

On the eastern shore of Lake Shikotsu are two small mountains: Mount Morappu (506 m) and Mount Kimun Morappu (478 m). Part of the national forest at the base of Mount Kimun Morappu to the north is open for birdwatching. The park has well-maintained walking trails where you can spot resident birds year-round and seasonal migratory birds, and enjoy a forest walk along moss-covered paths that feel like a green carpet.

The forest features a birdwatching shelter and information boards introducing the birds you may see here. Learn about local species such as tits (including Japanese Tits), leaf warblers, and woodpeckers like the Black Woodpecker.

Seasonal wildflowers are also a highlight, including Adonis ramosa in spring and Arisaema amurense in early summer. As you walk, you’ll find viewpoints where you can glimpse the caldera lake, Lake Shikotsu, and the surrounding rim mountains through the trees. A stroll here, with birdsong and the sound of the wind in the branches, is a perfect way to reset and recharge.
