Sakaneya Taisha Shop: Izumo Zenzai Mochi

A teahouse in Goen Yokocho, a gourmet alley right in front of the main gate of Izumo Taisha Shrine. Run by the long-established Japanese sweets maker “Sukune Mochi Honpo Sakaneya,” founded in 1872, it’s known for Izumo zenzai. Zenzai, one of Japan’s signature sweet red bean soups topped with mochi, is said to have originated in Izumo.

Only carefully selected ingredients are used, including premium Dainagon azuki beans sourced from local partner farmers, valued for their aroma, size, and thin skins, and glutinous rice flour made from mochi rice grown in Okuizumo. The rare moshio sea salt that sharpens the sweetness is also produced in the Usagi area near Izumo Taisha Shrine.

Along with seasonal items like “Zenzai Shaved Ice,” perfect for summer, the shop also offers popular take-home treats such as Izumo Zenzai Mochi, a grilled-mochi-style Japanese sweet made with the same ingredients as their Izumo zenzai.
