Namegawaotaki Fall

A must-see waterfall-its powerful view from the basin is especially impressive, and it’s among the largest in the Tohoku region.

Namegawaotaki Fall lies upstream on the Matsukawa River, a tributary of the Abukuma River. With an Approx. 130 ft width and an Approx. 260 ft drop, this dynamically plunging waterfall is one of the largest in the Tohoku region and has also been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls.

From Namerikawa Onsen, it’s an Approx. 30-minute walk along a mountain trail to the viewing deck where you can see the falls. The former suspension bridge had been closed due to deterioration, but a new one was built in 2022, making access easier. To use it, a toll (200 yen round trip) is required for the suspension bridge’s upkeep and maintenance. If you want to get closer to the falls, continue down the trail for another Approx. 30 minutes and cross the stream to reach the basin. You’ll need clothes and shoes that can get wet, but the powerful view of the falls from the basin makes it well worth the effort.

If you’re staying at Namerikawa Onsen, the nearest station to the falls is Toge Station on the JR Ou Main Line. This unmanned mountain station stands out for its distinctive look and is popular—especially with rail fans—as a “hidden station,” so it’s also worth a visit.
