Umakko Park Iwate
Easy horseback riding experiences, even for beginners! Plenty of kid-friendly programs, too.
Wide lawn underfoot, playground gear nearby, and the quiet presence of horses and ponies right on-site. They greet visitors with sweet, curious looks. One of the best parts is being able to try horseback riding without becoming a member, so plenty of people stop by because they “want to ride at least once” or “want to interact with their favorite horses.”
Trial lessons start at 15 minutes, and both experienced riders and beginners are welcome. There are four sessions per day, all by reservation only, so if you’d like to join, call or email ahead to check availability before you go.
Horseback riding isn’t the only thing on offer—there are hands-on programs that kids can enjoy safely, too. Popular options include a guided “lead-rein ride” on a horse or pony, a “pony carriage” for groups of six or more (reservation required), and a plan that lets you take a friendly walk with a pony.
Every fall, the park hosts its appreciation festival, the “Umakkō Festa.” Along with the regular programs, there are events like dog and cat adoption fairs, a flea market, and food stalls—enough going on to keep the day feeling lively. Check the official website for dates and times.
