Fujiya Senshu “Hasekura Yaki”
A Western-style wagashi named after a samurai of the Sendai Domain, with addictive walnut-flavored white bean paste.
Step into Sendai’s souvenir scene and you’ll soon run into Hasekura Yaki, made and sold by Fujiya Senshu, a long-established confectionery shop in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. This Western-style wagashi features walnut-flavored strained white bean paste wrapped in a shell made with butter, eggs, sugar, and flour, and it has been loved for over 60 years as a classic Miyagi souvenir.
The refined sweetness of the strained white bean paste is complemented by the aroma and texture of walnuts, pairing perfectly with the moist, cookie-like dough. Each piece is carefully shaped and baked using a wooden mold carved with the words “Hasekura Yaki.” The name Hasekura Yaki (pronounced hah-seh-koo-rah yah-kee) comes from Tsunenaga Hasekura, a samurai of the Sendai Domain who led a delegation to Europe during the Edo period. In honor of his achievements in promoting East–West exchange, this Japanese-Western fusion sweet was given his name.
It’s sold at the Fujiya Senshu Main Store in Aoba Ward, Sendai, the S-PAL shop near Sendai Station, and at other souvenir shops around Miyagi Prefecture.
