Shonai Shrine

The cherry blossom tree-lined moat at Tsuruoka Park opens up to reveal Shonai Shrine, a coveted destination that was first established in 1877 by the people of Shonai to honor the former lords of the Shonai domain. Built on the former site of Tsurugaoka Castle's main enclosure, the shrine enshrines four of the domain’s historical lords. Since its founding, it has been affectionately referred to as "Jinja-han" by locals and remains a cherished spiritual center in the Shonai region.

One of the recent highlights at the shrine is the Hana Chozu, where seasonal flowers float in the water of the purification basin for a picture-perfect sight that soothes the soul. Be sure to try Mizu Omikuji, a one-of-a-kind custom here where fortunes appear when the paper is floated on water.

The shrine is also famous for the Enmusubi Tanabata Festival, held annually from late June to early August. The grounds are done up in full illuminations at this time, complete with a special limited-edition Goshuin (shrine stamp) to collect. Be sure to get your hands on an Ajisai Omikuji, where fortunes float among hydrangeas, or snap a shot or memory in yukata at the special photography spots set up around the shrine.

Next to the main hall, the shrine also features a treasure hall displaying precious items related to the Sakai family, including weapons and fine art.
