Shimamui Coast
A view of glittering Shakotan Blue waters unfolds just beyond a tunnel.
Located on the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido, Shimamui Coast is renowned for its stunning scenery—featuring sheer cliffs and crystal-clear waters so vibrant they've earned the name “Shakotan Blue”. This coastal gem is also recognized as one of the 100 Best Shores in Japan.
Access to the coast is via a pedestrian-only tunnel. After walking through its dim interior, you’ll emerge to find a breathtaking view: dramatic rock formations and towering cliffs lining a brilliantly blue sea. The sudden contrast from darkness to panoramic beauty is nothing short of awe-inspiring.
From here a trail descends to the shoreline where the clear waters wait to tickle your fingertips firsthand.
In early summer, the cliffs are blanketed with Ezokanzo lilies, the town flower of Shakotan, adding vivid splashes of orange to the coastal scene. In winter, lucky visitors may even catch a glimpse of seals basking along the shore. As the day fades, the sunset paints the horizon in shades of crimson, creating a magical atmosphere. At night, the star-filled sky adds a peaceful, otherworldly charm.
Whether in the morning light, summer bloom, or twilight glow, Shimamui Coast offers ever-changing beauty—a destination that captivates in every season and at every hour.
