Located next to the expansive and nature-kissed Nopporo Forest Park, the Historical Village of Hokkaido is an open-air museum that faithfully preserves and recreates the atmosphere of Hokkaido's pioneering era, spanning from the Meiji to early Showa periods.

Spread across a vast 54.2-hectare site, the village is divided into four distinct areas—town, fishing village, farming village, and mountain village—with 52 restored and reconstructed buildings. Not only are the exteriors authentic, but the interiors are also furnished with period furniture and tools, immersing visitors in the feel of Hokkaido’s early days.
The summer season brings the chance to ride a horse-drawn tram that travels from the town area to the farming village along the main street. In winter, horse-drawn sleigh rides are available on weekends, public holidays, and during the Sapporo Snow Festival period, offering a nostalgic way to explore the retro streetscape at a leisurely pace.

The museum also offers hands-on experiences such as making traditional toys in the Learning Center, along with activities tied to specific buildings, like dyeing crafts or newspaper editing. When hunger strikes, drop in for a taste of Hokkaido-style dishes like imo mochi (potato cakes) or nishin soba (herring soba) at the on-site cafeteria.
