Azuchi Castle Tenshu: Nobunaga’s Palace
Experience it across time: Oda Nobunaga’s grand, legendary lost castle.
Azuchi Castle Tenshu: Nobunaga’s Palace is located within Azuchi Town Bungei no Sato, a multipurpose facility in Shiga Prefecture.
Azuchi Castle was built in 1579 and burned down just a few years later. Standing 46 meters tall, it once amazed people as the tallest wooden structure in the world. A symbol of the overwhelming power of the warlord Oda Nobunaga, its brilliant, lavish interiors still captivate many people today.
Inside, you can see a life-size exhibit of the very top of Azuchi Castle’s tenshu (the 5th and 6th floors of the building), which was showcased at the 1992 World Exposition in Seville, Spain. Recreated details include gold-leaf-covered exterior walls, folding screen and wall paintings said to have been painted by Kano Eitoku, and golden shachihoko roof ornaments, bringing the splendor of the era to life today.
In addition, the VR theater presents a Approx. 15-minute short film that powerfully recreates what Azuchi Castle looked like at the time. Standing before the towering castle, you can feel as if you are truly there.
At Azuchi Castle Tenshu: Nobunaga’s Palace, come experience Nobunaga’s ambition and power for yourself.
