Kagoshima Jingu Shrine
One of the largest shrines in southern Kyushu, designated a National Historic Site.
This venerable shrine is said to have been founded in the Age of the Gods, and is also linked in tradition to the reign of Emperor Jimmu, regarded as Japan’s first emperor. Its main deities are Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto and Toyotamahime-no-Mikoto from the Umisachi, Yamasachi myth.
One of the largest shrines in southern Kyushu, the shrine grounds and surrounding area are designated a National Historic Site as the “Osumi Shohachimangu Shrine Precinct and Former Shinto Priest Residence Site.” In addition, the Main Hall, Worship Hall, Imperial Envoy Hall, and the Main Hall of the subordinate Shisho Shrine are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
The rich decorations adorning the buildings inside and out are well worth seeing, including the A-un lion mural on the front of the Main Hall and the ceiling painting in the Worship Hall featuring over 200 plants. The subordinate Iwatai Shrine is widely worshiped as a deity of safe childbirth; it is said that taking home one of the round stones stacked on the grounds as a protective charm brings blessings for an easy delivery.
Local folk toys such as taiguruma, pompachi, keshobako, and hatobue are dedicated here, including items you won’t see anywhere else. Some are also sold as shrine items, making them great souvenirs.
