Yumiharidake Observatory
Sasebo’s top scenic overlook with swooping views of city, harbor, and islands below.
Towering from the western side of central Sasebo City in Nagasaki Prefecture, Mt. Yumihari rises to an elevation of 364 meters and offers one of Sasebo’s most stunning panoramic views. Make your way to the summit for a view out over Sasebo Port, a common port for massive cruise ships and Japan Self-Defense Force vessels to anchor, plus the glittering cityscape nestled around the bay. Looking westward, the horizon stretches out to the Goto-nada Sea and the scattered islands of the Kujuku Islands, creating a breathtaking coastal vista.
The transforms after dark into a glowing tapestry of lights from the port and city, earning it a spot on the "Japan’s Top 100 Night Views" list. The observatory itself is also noteworthy, complete with a distinctive bow-shaped triangular roof designed by Yoshikatsu Tsuboi, one of Japan’s most renowned structural engineers, known for his work on the National Yoyogi Gymnasium. Recognized for its unique architecture, the structure is listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.
Access to the observatory, located in Yumihari Park, is primarily by car or taxi. While there is a parking area, the narrow mountain roads can be challenging, especially for unfamiliar drivers. For ease and safety, it’s recommended to use a local taxi service driven by someone accustomed to the terrain.
