Funakoshi Observatory

The Funakoshi Observatory offers a magnificent view of a ria coast dotted with 208 islands of various sizes.

Last update :

Funakoshi Observatory is one of the "Eight Views of Kujukushima" selected by Sasebo City, offering a spectacular view of the Kujukushima islands, comprising 208 islands of various sizes. The observatory is positioned to overlook the complex coastline of the Rias coast, allowing visitors to witness the densest cluster of islands in Japan.

Not only are the views on clear days impressive, but the scenery on rainy days also resembles a beautiful ink painting. Additionally, between late January and March, the cold season, there's an opportunity to observe cranes returning north. The cranes migrate from their wintering grounds in Kagoshima Prefecture to their breeding grounds in Siberia, and their route takes them over the skies of Kujukushima, attracting amateur photographers and birdwatchers.

The observatory is designed to be barrier-free, eliminating steps to make it easily accessible for visitors in wheelchairs.
