Kirishima-Jingu Station
A charming station building with the warmth of wood.
Kirishima-Jingu Station is the closest station to Kirishima Shrine, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The station was newly renovated and reopened on March 22, 2024, using nearly 100% locally sourced cedar wood from Kagoshima Prefecture. Inspired by the surrounding forests near Kirishima Shrine, the station building features a symbolic “sacred tree” standing 4 meters tall, cut from the experimental forest of Kagoshima University’s Faculty of Agriculture. The result is a warm, tranquil atmosphere filled with the scent of wood.
Inside the station, new areas for dining and shopping have been established with a theme of “food and craftsmanship” from both Kagoshima and beyond. The "Gallery Jiji" showcases and sells handcrafted works created by skilled artisans. A new addition is "Quili," a galette specialty shop that uses 100% organic buckwheat flour from Kirishima. Their menu includes galettes featuring local strawberries, matcha, and other seasonal ingredients.
Just a 3-minute walk from the station is Megui, a creative Italian restaurant using local ingredients that opened in April 2024. It operates by reservation only, offering a special dining experience in an exclusive setting. Adjacent to the restaurant are two more attractions: Tenchijin, an art gallery renovated from a 100-year-old stone warehouse, and Kōbō, an all-day lounge. Starting April 2024, visitors can also enjoy three kinds of shaved ice desserts made with local ingredients.
Also nearby is Sensen, a private Finnish-style sauna limited to three groups per day. Surrounded by nature, this unique sauna experience even lets you hear the sounds of passing trains from within the sauna itself.
Right outside the station, there’s also a footbath that draws water from a town-managed hot spring source—perfect for a relaxing break while waiting for your train.
