Otabe Main Store
Experience the charm of Kyoto’s famous confection through tours and hands-on activities.
This shop, which also houses the factory of Kyoto’s nationally famous confection Otabe—a classic Kyoto souvenir—offers both shopping and unique experiences. Alongside the standard lineup, visitors can enjoy exclusive sweets such as the Main Store Soufflé Sandwich, with fluffy sponge and mildly tangy cheese cream, and the Main Store Crêpe Monaka, featuring homemade sweet red bean paste and a new-texture cream wrapped in crêpe and sandwiched in a crisp monaka wafer.
Because the factory is on-site, there’s plenty to enjoy beyond shopping. The factory tour requires no reservation, allowing you to watch the production process through large glass windows. If space is available, you can also join the same-day Easy Otabe Experience (paid), where you get to make Otabe by placing red bean paste between raw yatsuhashi dough. With no age restrictions, it’s popular among families with children—and includes three Otabe souvenirs to take home.
For a deeper dive, the Otabe Experience Dojo (paid, reservation required one week in advance) lets participants knead freshly steamed dough by hand and carefully work through the entire process, finishing with the signature triangular Otabe. This immersive workshop is highly recommended for those who want to fully experience the craftsmanship behind Kyoto’s beloved sweet.
