You have to do a bit of climbing, but once you're up there, you get an amazing view of Lake Biwa and the mountains. On clear days, the scenery is super wide and open. At night, you can catch the night view—it's really romantic. It's not crowded at all, so it's quiet and perfect if you want to get away from the noise and just enjoy the scenery.

Mt. Mantoro Observatory
A hidden scenic spot offering sweeping views of both Kyoto City and the Nara Basin.
The Mt. Mantoro Observatory sits atop Mt. Omine in Ide Town, Kyoto Prefecture, at an elevation of about 300 meters. From the summit, you can take in sweeping views of Ide Town with the Kizu River flowing below, stretching out as far as Kyoto Tower and the cityscape of Kyoto, as well as Mt. Ikoma in Nara. Especially at dusk and into the evening, the glowing city lights and the silhouettes of Kyoto Tower and Mt. Ikoma create a breathtaking scene. The observatory is also renowned for its night views, which have been officially recognized as part of Japan’s Night View Heritage.
Although located away from Kyoto’s city center, it offers a unique vantage point during the annual “Kyoto Gozan Okuribi” on August 16, where two of the giant bonfire characters can be seen. Access to the observatory is available by car, or on foot from JR Yamashiro-Taga Station, with a well-maintained hiking trail that takes about 60 minutes to reach the summit. The observatory also features two gazebos, making it a perfect spot to rest during a hike.
