Tamasudare Falls
One of Tohoku’s most impressive straight waterfalls, with nighttime illuminations during the holiday season.
A historic waterfall said to have been discovered and named by Kobo Daishi around 1,200 years ago following a divine revelation. With a drop of 63 meters and a width of 5 meters, it is one of the largest in the Tohoku region, and the sight of it cascading powerfully down the cliff is spectacular. The area around the falls is surrounded by giant moss-covered cedar trees and filled with fresh air. Once a site of Shugendo mountain ascetic practice, the area has a solemn atmosphere, and “Mitake Shrine” stands in front of the falls.
During Golden Week and the Obon holiday period, the falls are illuminated at night. You can enjoy the fantastical sight of the waterfall glowing in the darkness. It is also impressive to see the falls freeze into an ice waterfall during the coldest season, from mid-January to early February. Please note that snow removal in winter is carried out only on weekends and holidays, so cars may not be able to pass on weekdays. It is Approx. 450 meters from Chokaisan Minami Terrace, where the parking lot is located, to the falls.
