Sensuikyo Gorge

A gorge located near the northern foothills between Nakadake and Takadake of Mt. Aso, an active volcano with one of the world's largest calderas.

Rugged mountain slopes formed by lava flows from eruptions of Mt. Aso spread out at an elevation of Approx. 900 m, and the surrounding views take in the dramatic Aso Outer Rim Mountains and the Kuju Mountain Range in Oita Prefecture.

From early to mid-May each year, Approx. 50,000 Miyamakirishima azalea plants bloom across the area, coloring it pink and creating scenery so beautiful that it is said to intoxicate even hermits, which is how the gorge got its name. A stroll here is also appealing because you can feel the energy of the active volcano, and the well-maintained walking paths are easy even for children, making this a perfect place to relax while enjoying seasonal flowers throughout the year.

If you come by car or taxi, a recommended plan is to stop by nearby Sensuikyo Onsen after your walk. There are facilities offering day-use bathing, including resort hotels with panoramic views of the Five Peaks of Aso, so you can casually enjoy these famous hot springs even without staying overnight.
