Iga Traditional Heritage Center: Iga Kumihimo Kumisho no Sato
A facility where you can view, shop for, and experience the traditional craft of Iga kumihimo.
Iga kumihimo, an essential part of traditional Japanese attire, is also designated as a national traditional craft. Through exhibits, sales, and hands-on experiences, this facility carries on the techniques passed down in Iga to the next generation.
On the first floor, there is an exhibition and sales space lined with colorful kumihimo products. Alongside obi-jime and haori himo for traditional Japanese wear, you will also find straps, accessories, and other items that fit beautifully into modern life. The second floor features exhibits and reference materials introducing the process of making kumihimo, and visitors can also admire intricate works by certified traditional craftsmen.
The paid kumihimo experience (2,000 yen, tax included) lets you make items such as keychains and bracelets by hand using techniques such as Kongo-gumi on a marudai stand. Some experiences are completed in Approx. 40 minutes, making them easy for beginners to enjoy. It is a great place to get close to Iga’s traditional techniques and the joy of craftsmanship.
