Kagoshima City Hirakawa Zoological Park
Meet a wide variety of animals, including koalas, at this uplifting leisure spot.
Set amid the natural beauty of Sakurajima and Kinko Bay, this zoo park is home to a wide variety of animals. It is also known as the only place in Kyushu that keeps koalas and as a spot where you can see them not behind glass, offering a chance to experience the importance of coexistence between nature and animals beyond simple exhibits.
Inside the park, more than Approx. 120 species of animals live here. In particular, the sight of giraffes, zebras, and ostriches spending their time leisurely in the “African Zone” evokes an authentic savanna. Areas where visitors can interact with rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, and sheep while learning about their ecology, as well as a footbath corner where you can relax while viewing the animals and Sakurajima, are also popular.
QR codes are also placed throughout the park, and by scanning them with your smartphone, you can watch exclusive videos available in four languages. The program introduces the characteristics and appeal of the animals in an easy-to-understand visual format, offering plenty to see and earning praise as a fun way to learn while exploring the park.
Spend a fulfilling day at this leisure spot, with a wide range of attractions including the “Night Zoo” (held in summer only), where you can observe animals in ways different from the daytime, an “Amusement Park” with a Ferris wheel, carousel, and go-karts, and a “Souvenir Shop” filled with original goods.
