Cape Ashizuri

Shikoku's southernmost cape, with spectacular scenery unfolding on a grand scale.

Supervised by :  Tosashimizu City

Shikoku's southernmost cape, located at the tip of the Ashizuri Peninsula as it projects into the Pacific Ocean.

The striking white lighthouse standing atop the cliffs is 18 meters tall. One of the largest in Japan, it has helped keep the seas safe since it was first lit in 1914. An observation deck near the lighthouse offers a 270-degree panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, so expansive that you can see the gentle curve of the horizon. The cape is also known as a sunrise viewing spot, drawing many visitors on New Year's Day to watch the year's first sunrise.

The area's abundant nature is another highlight. Around the cape grows a wealth of subtropical vegetation, including nationally designated natural monument Chinese banyan trees, ubame oak, and fountain palms. Around 60,000 wild camellias bloom from early to late February, adding color to the winter landscape. The surrounding waters also offer marine activities such as scuba diving and snorkeling. Visitors can also explore the Ashizuri Seven Wonders, a collection of sites associated with Kobo Daishi.

*The observation deck will be closed for renovation from September 2026 to March 2028, with partial access resuming in September 2027. Panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean will remain available from the adjacent Tengu-no-Hana Observatory.
