Paramita Museum
An art museum where nature and art come together.
Paramita Museum stands in the lush town of Komono, Mie Prefecture, at the foot of Mount Gozaisho, the main peak of the Suzuka Mountains. Opened in March 2003, the museum presents exhibitions through both a diverse collection, including the Heart Sutra Series of ceramic sculptures by international multi-artist Masuo Ikeda, and engaging special exhibitions.
The museum’s name, “Paramita,” comes from the Sanskrit word “pāramitā,” in reference to its main collection, the Heart Sutra Series. This group of works, alive with a distinctive sense of form, is one of Paramita Museum’s signature highlights. Inside the museum, visitors can also see a wide range of works, including sculpture, paintings, and crafts. The museum also actively holds special exhibitions, offering different themes and forms of expression with each visit.
Also worth enjoying is Paramita Garden, located beside the museum. Led by ceramic artist Koichi Uchida’s “Path of Pots,” this 1,200-tsubo garden is a satoyama-style garden colored by approx. 200 plant species, mainly wildflowers and plants native to the foothills of the Suzuka Mountains, where visitors can stroll while sensing the changing seasons. A 200-year-old zelkova tree is another must-see. The garden also features outdoor sculptures by Makio Yamaguchi that harmonize with nature, as well as Keiji Ito’s “Wall of Paramita,” inspired by the Six Paramitas, allowing visitors to enjoy art in a natural setting.
