Mie Prefectural Art Museum
Discover masterpieces and let your senses open up. Stop by the museum and add a quiet pause to your trip.
Opened in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, in 1982, this art museum added a memorial hall in 2003 dedicated to the works of master sculptor Yoshitatsu Yanagihara. Its collection boasts Approx. 6,000 works, displayed in the permanent exhibition galleries in four rotations each year.
The museum focuses mainly on works by artists from Mie Prefecture or closely connected to the area, including mid-Edo period painter Soga Shohaku, along with a wide range of modern Western-style Japanese paintings from the Meiji period onward. In addition to Impressionist works such as Monet’s Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sailboat and Renoir’s Young Woman in Blue, the museum has also built a notable collection of Spanish paintings by artists such as Murillo and Dalí, inspired by Mie Prefecture’s sister-state affiliation with Valencia, Spain.
The special exhibitions held several times throughout the year are also worth checking out. Alongside independently curated exhibitions built around original themes, the museum also presents collaborative exhibitions spotlighting a variety of art from Japan and abroad. Enjoy a quiet, refined art-filled moment in the beautiful space designed by architect Hiroyasu Fuke.
