Matama Beach
A beach popular with couples for its romantic views of the sunset and tidal flats.
This beach faces the Suo Sea in Oita Prefecture. Its shallow waters create the distinctive striped patterns of tidal flats. Located on the western side of the Kunisaki Peninsula, it is the only place in Oita Prefecture where the sun can be seen setting over the horizon.
The contrast between the orange sunlight reflected on the water and the tidal flats creates a beautiful, dreamlike scene. The beach is a nationally registered monument and has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Sunset Spots. The Matama Beach Koikana Sunset Terrace complex stands along the shore, attracting many visitors for the views from its restaurant and terrace. Clam digging is popular in spring.
National Route 213, which runs along the coast, is popularly known among couples as Koikana Road, or the Road of Love Fulfilled. Along with Matama Beach, its many attractions include Awashima Shrine, known for its deity of matchmaking; Awashima Park, where couples attach heart-shaped padlocks to a monument and pledge their eternal love; and Nagasakibana, a cape featuring flowers and art. The route offers a romantic drive of approximately 20 km.
