Nagashima Museum
Appreciate Japanese and international masterpieces alongside sweeping views.
Opened in 1989 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kagoshima City, this museum stands on a hill overlooking the city. Visitors can appreciate art in a peaceful setting surrounded by subtropical trees.
The museum houses approximately 1,000 works. Its wide-ranging collection includes works by artists with ties to Kagoshima, such as Seiki Kuroda, Takeji Fujishima, and Eisaku Wada; paintings and sculptures by internationally renowned artists including Chagall, Rodin, and Utrillo; and traditional crafts such as Satsuma ware. In addition to the permanent exhibition, temporary and special exhibitions are held regularly, offering opportunities to encounter a diverse array of art.
The garden is also dotted with impressive outdoor sculptures. As you walk through the lush grounds filled with subtropical plants, you are surrounded by scenery where nature and art exist in harmony.
The views from the museum and garden are another highlight. From the hill, approximately 360 feet above sea level, sweeping views unfold across Sakurajima, Kinko Bay, and the Kagoshima cityscape. The second-floor cafe is also an inviting place to relax while taking in the scenery through its large windows.
