This large park is located in Mabuni, Itoman City, in southern Okinawa Island. Its grounds include the hills where the final fierce fighting of the Battle of Okinawa took place, with the coastline stretching along the southeastern side. The park is home to the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, which conveys the realities of the Battle of Okinawa and the importance of peace, as well as the Okinawa Peace Hall, dedicated to the repose of those who died in the war and the hope for lasting peace, the National Cemetery for the Okinawa War Dead, and memorial monuments from prefectures across Japan.
Among these sites, the Cornerstone of Peace is a memorial inscribed with the names of all those who died in the Battle of Okinawa and related conflicts, regardless of nationality or whether they were military personnel or civilians. At its center burns the Flame of Peace. The site preserves the memories and lessons of war while expressing hope for lasting peace throughout the world.
The park also has lawns and a multipurpose field, where families gather on holidays to play ball games or have picnics. In addition to facilities for remembrance and learning about peace, there are areas for walking and observing nature.
