Sakurai Shrine

A shrine located at the tip of the Itoshima Peninsula in Fukuoka. It consists of Sakurai Shrine, founded in 1632 during the early Edo period by Kuroda Tadayuki, the second lord of the Fukuoka Domain, and Sakurai Daijingu, adjacent to the shrine grounds, where divided spirits invited from the Inner Shrine and Outer Shrine of Ise Jingu are enshrined. Itoshima prospered since ancient times as a gateway for exchange with the Asian continent, and many ancient burial mounds still dot the area today.

It’s not the ornate kind of shrine. Instead, the farther you walk, the more you can feel its history. The stone torii gate and forest setting feel very Japanese.

You can visit Sakurai Shrine together with the nearby Sakurai Futamigaura and Meoto Iwa. Walk around the shrine first, then head to the coast to see the white torii gate, so you can enjoy both the forest and ocean views in one trip.

Mount Aso is the volcanic area and 5 peaks along the large caldera that was created as the result of 4 large eruptions some 270,000 to 90,000 years ago. Here, inside this world’s largest caldera and volcanic area you’ll find a train line running through the three local municipalities of Aso, Takamori and Minamiaso, towards the 50,000 people who live there.

Former Yagyu Clan Chief Retainer Residence

In the late Edo period, Shurei Oyamada served as the chief retainer of the Yagyu Domain, which had a stipend of 12,000 koku. A man of remarkable talent, he was credited with restoring the domain’s finances. This residence, the Former Yagyu Clan Chief Retainer Residence, was built on land gifted to him by the domain’s lord in recognition of his achievements.

The most charming thing about Genbikei Gorge is the Kakko Dango. The shop is on the other side of the river, and they send the dango and hot tea down to you in a basket along a rope. Sometimes they even play sweet songs and put up flags. Everyone calls it the 'flying dango.'

Omi Shrine

The Omi Shrine is located on the site of the Omi Otsu no Miya Palace, which was the capital of Japan for five years from 667. The shrine is dedicated to Emperor Tenji, the 38th Emperor of Japan, who was involved in the Taika Reform as Naka no Oe no Oji Prince and moved the capital from Asuka in Nara to Otsu in Omi.
