This park is home to the remains of castles used by the Akita Clan (who once governed the area) from 1602 through 1869. In 1896 the remains were adapted into a park, following the designs of Nagaoka Yasuhei, and the park was given the name Senshu Park.
Recognized in lists such as “100 Historical Parks in Japan,” “100 Famous Castles of Japan,” “100 Cherry Blossom Castles,” and “100 Urban Parks in Japan,” as well as being designated as a cultural asset of Japan, Senshu Park is famous both locally and country-wide!
In the spring, visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms, azaleas, and wisteria in full bloom. The park’s fresh greenery and autumn colors are also exquisite, making it a lovely place to enjoy the changing of the seasons.
At night, the gates and castle are lit up, giving the park a fantastical atmosphere. (Lights are on for limited hours.)
