The Aomori Nebuta Matsuri is one of the Tohoku Sandai Matsuri, or the 3 Great Festivals of Tohoku, along with Sendai’s Tanabata Matsuri and Akita’s Kanto Matsuri.
“Nebuta,” which are a type of large festival float, and large groups of dancers called “haneto” parade through Aomori City.

The Exciting Procession of Nebuta!

Around 20 nebuta run a 3.1-kilometer course, and all the while crowds of haneto leap around them while chanting “rassera, rassera.”
The nebuta are ferried around Aomori Bay as the Aomori Fireworks Festival is in full swing on the festival’s last day, August 7th.

Nebuta, which are made by expert craftsmen who specialize in nebuta, take around 3 months to build, and new ones are created each year. Prizes are given to exceptional specimens.
Nebuta are about 9 meters wide, 7 meters long, 5 meters high, and weigh about 4 tons.
Anywhere from 800 to 1000 lights can be attached to the nebuta, so they’re incredibly impressive to see, even at night!

Put on a Haneto Outfit and Participate!

Just watching is fun, but anyone can participate in the festivities if they put on haneto clothes!
There is no advanced registration or acceptance.
Haneto costumes can be purchased in places like department stores for around 10,000 yen, and some shops offer costume rentals and dressing assistance for around 4,000 yen.

The Food is Delicious Too!

Near the festival site are plenty of food stalls selling fresh seafood!
It may get a bit chilly at night, so it could be a good idea to bring a jacket.
