Otaru Snow Light Path is one of the most enchanting winter events in Otaru, Hokkaido.
The soft glow of snow and candles fills the whole town, turning its historic canal and sloping streets into a romantic scene.
This stroll-style event centers on the Otaru Canal and the former Temiya Line site, with lights spread across multiple locations throughout the city, each with its own appeal.
In this article, we’ll walk you through the highlights of each venue, how to enjoy them, and a model course for seeing them efficiently.
Use it as your guide to experience Otaru Snow Light Path to the fullest.

What Is Otaru Snow Light Path Like?

Otaru Snow Light Path is a winter event that began in 1999.
Set against Otaru’s historic streetscapes, including the Otaru Canal and the former Japanese National Railways Temiya Line site, snow sculptures and candlelight create a magical atmosphere.
Led mainly by local citizen volunteers, the event features handmade ice candles and snow-and-candle objects. It has become a popular annual event held for eight days from early to mid-February.
In recent years, many overseas volunteers have also joined, making it an international event that draws visitors from around the world.
Admission to view the venues is basically free, with charges applying only to some experiences and food and drinks.
Weekends and the illumination hours after sunset tend to be especially crowded, so if you want to take your time, visiting on a weekday around sunset is recommended.

Four Otaru Snow Light Path Venues Filled with Magical Lights

Otaru Snow Light Path is a stroll-style event with venues spread across several areas of Otaru.
At its heart is the area around the Otaru Canal, where you can enjoy historic streetscapes together with the snowy lights.
Each venue has a different atmosphere, which is part of what makes walking around and taking in Otaru’s winter scenery so enjoyable.
To get to Otaru, it’s best to use public transportation.
From New Chitose Airport, you can take the JR Rapid Airport directly to Otaru Station with no transfers.
The trip takes Approx. 73 minutes at the fastest.
If you’re coming from Sapporo, you can also take the Rapid Airport and arrive in Approx. 40 minutes.
However, transportation may be delayed or suspended due to weather conditions, so be sure to check the latest transit information regularly.
From here, we’ll introduce the four main venues of Otaru Snow Light Path.

1. Otaru Canal Venue: Great for Photos, Surrounded by Town Lights and Candlelight

If it’s your first visit, this is a classic spot you won’t want to miss.
Along the canal, you’ll find rows of floating glass-ball candles and candle-lit photo spots.
Together with the gas lamps and historic warehouses, they create a dreamy scene that feels unmistakably Otaru.
The lights shimmering on the water are also beautiful, and the time after sunset is especially photogenic.
That said, this is one of the most popular photo spots, and most visitors to Otaru Snow Light Path stop here to take pictures.
If you want to enjoy it fully, plan to spend around 1 to 1.5 hours here.

2. Otaru Art Base Venue: Nostalgic Atmosphere and Great for Playing in the Snow

The Otaru Art Base Venue is an area centered around Otaru Art Base, a cultural facility housed in historic buildings.
The surrounding area is dotted with Otaru’s signature classical architecture, and the soft glow of the snow lights adds an elegant, nostalgic feel.
It’s only about a 3-minute walk from the Otaru Canal, making it easy to stop by during your stroll.
Approx. stay time is around 30 to 45 minutes.
There is also a slide and a snow play area, so if you’re visiting with children, it’s a good idea to allow extra time.

3. Temiya Line Venue: A Romantic Walk Through Warm Light

The Temiya Line Venue is a popular area that uses the former railway site of the old Japanese National Railways Temiya Line.
Snow lights line the tracks, creating a romantic setting where it feels as though you’re walking down a path of light.
The combination of the straight path and candles also makes it easy to take photos while enjoying the snow lights at a relaxed pace.
Compared with the canal venue, there are times when this area feels calmer and easier to explore, making it ideal if you want to enjoy Otaru’s night in a quieter mood.
Approx. stay time is around 30 to 45 minutes.

4. Tenguyama Venue: Enjoy Night Views, Nature, and Candles

The Tenguyama Venue is a scenic spot spread across the summit of Mount Tengu, where you can look out over Otaru city.
Mount Tengu is an especially romantic place that has also served as a setting for movies and TV dramas.
Once you reach the summit, one of the biggest draws is being able to enjoy both the snow lights and the night view together.
Unlike the venues in the city center, this one has a natural atmosphere surrounded by the outdoors, and it is generally less crowded than the main venues.
It is also an area where it is easy to spend a quiet moment enjoying the night view.
Because you can enjoy the snow lights while looking down over the lights of Otaru, it’s also perfect as the finale of your trip.
Approx. stay time is 45 minutes to 1 hour, but it’s recommended to allow extra time for travel as well.

Otaru Snow Light Path 2026 Event Report

The 2026 Otaru Snow Light Path was held from February 7 to 14, 2026.
The venues were filled with many couples and families, and it was impressive to see each of them enjoying the snow lights in their own way.
After sunset, the historic townscape and the snow lights were a perfect match.
One especially memorable sight was local volunteers lighting the candles one by one as the town gradually grew darker.

There were even lines of visitors taking selfies with the canal and its floating glass-ball candles in the background.

Three Tips for Making the Most of Otaru Snow Light Path

While Otaru Snow Light Path offers magical scenery, it is also an event where you walk outdoors in winter and visit multiple venues.
The main lights look especially beautiful from late afternoon onward, and with the illumination starting at 5:00pm, preparation for the cold and snowy footing can make a big difference in how much you enjoy it.
To fully appreciate the scenery, be sure to keep these points in mind beforehand.

1. Dress Warmly and Thoroughly

Because Otaru is close to the sea, it can feel colder than the actual temperature suggests.
In addition to a coat, it’s reassuring to dress in layers and bring gloves, a hat, and a scarf.
To stay comfortable during a long walk, choose thick socks and insulated shoes so your feet don’t get cold easily.

2. Plan Your Visit Around Sunset

The snow lights are at their most beautiful from late afternoon into the evening, when the candlelight stands out most clearly.
If you take care of your travel between venues or have an early dinner while it’s still light out, then head to the canal or Temiya Line venues in time for the illumination, you’ll be able to enjoy the changing scenery as well.

3. Watch Your Step and Follow Photo Etiquette

There are many snowy and icy roads around the venues, so it’s essential to walk slowly in shoes with good grip.
When taking photos, be considerate of other visitors, share the space, and avoid stopping in the middle of walkways or staying in the same spot for too long.
Since this event is supported by many volunteers, be mindful of preserving the atmosphere and helping everyone enjoy their time there.
