Munakata Oshima, Fukuoka: A Relaxing Two-Day, One-Night Trip to World Heritage Sites and the “Guardian Island of the Deities”
About an hour’s drive north of Fukuoka, the gateway to Kyushu, lies Munakata.
Facing the Genkai Sea, the city is home to components of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region,” stretching from the mainland to Okinoshima.
This two-day, one-night itinerary takes you to Munakata Oshima, the closest accessible island to Okinoshima, a sacred island closed to the public. Visits to the shrines of Munakata Taisha reveal the story behind the region’s World Heritage sites.
Enjoy sweeping views of the Genkai Sea, island cuisine, outdoor activities, and a resort stay as you discover the long-standing maritime faith surrounding the Three Goddesses of Munakata and settle into the island’s slower pace.
What Is Munakata Oshima Like?
Munakata Oshima lies off the coast of Munakata City and is Fukuoka Prefecture’s largest offshore island, covering approximately 7.17 square kilometers and home to around 540 people.
It is easy to reach from Fukuoka City: Konominato Port is approximately 60 minutes by car from Fukuoka Airport, followed by a boat ride of around 15-25 minutes.
Closely connected to the World Heritage Site “Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region,” the island is home to Nakatsu-miya, Munakata Taisha, and Okitsu-miya Yohaisho, a place to worship Okinoshima from across the sea.
While Okinoshima is known as the “sacred island,” Munakata Oshima is also called the “Guardian Island of the Deities,” reflecting its role in safeguarding their worship.

4 Things to Experience on Munakata Oshima
Munakata Oshima offers much more than the history and faith associated with its World Heritage sites.
Spectacular views of the Genkai Sea, activities that bring you close to nature, and a relaxing overnight resort stay are all part of its appeal.
Here are four experiences to enjoy during your visit.
1. Discover the World Heritage Story
Begin by learning about the rituals of Okinoshima and the World Heritage sites at Uminomichi Munakatakan Museum on the mainland, then visit Hetsu-miya, Munakata Taisha.
Continue to Nakatsu-miya, Okitsu-miya Yohaisho, and Oshima Koryu-kan (Oshima Cultural Center) on Munakata Oshima to discover how worship of the Three Goddesses of Munakata connects the mainland, Oshima, and Okinoshima across the sea.

2. Take In the Island’s Spectacular Scenery
Surrounded by the Genkai Sea, Munakata Oshima offers beautiful views of sea and sky throughout the island.
At Nakatsu-miya, the rising sun illuminates the shrine approach to create a “Path of Light” when conditions align around the traditional beginnings of spring and winter, in early February and early November.
Other scenic stops include Yume-no-Sayoshima Islet, with its vermilion torii gate standing above the water, and Windmill Observation Point, overlooking the Genkai Sea.

3. Enjoy Outdoor Adventures in Nature
From buggy rides over varied terrain to horseback riding with ocean views, Munakata Oshima offers plenty of ways to experience its natural surroundings.
At Umi-ing Oshima, you can also enjoy fishing in sea pens or from a breakwater, sea kayaking, and other seaside activities.

4. Slow Down at MUNAKATA OSHIMA RESORT
Make the most of your visit by staying overnight and enjoying the island at a leisurely pace.
With MUNAKATA OSHIMA RESORT as your base overlooking the Genkai Sea, spend time watching the sunset, gazing at the stars, and sampling island cuisine.
Watching the scenery change from morning to night without rushing from place to place is one of the pleasures of an island getaway.

World Heritage and a Relaxing Island Escape: A Two-Day, One-Night Munakata Oshima Itinerary
Begin your first day by learning about the World Heritage sites, then visit Hetsu-miya, Munakata Taisha, a center of worship of the Three Goddesses of Munakata, and discover the area’s food and local specialties.
After exploring Munakata’s deep connection with the sea on the mainland, board a boat at Konominato Port for Munakata Oshima.
Day 1|Explore Munakata’s Faith and Culture Shaped by the Sea
Your first day combines World Heritage sites, scenic spots, and local food culture, beginning with picking up a rental car at Fukuoka Airport.
11am|Discover the World Heritage Story at Uminomichi Munakatakan Museum
Your first stop is Uminomichi Munakatakan Museum, next to Hetsu-miya, Munakata Taisha.
Large-screen presentations and virtual reality offer a glimpse of Okinoshima, which is closed to the general public.
Learning about the faith shaped by these seas will help you understand the connections between Hetsu-miya, Nakatsu-miya, and Okitsu-miya Yohaisho before visiting them.

12pm|Visit Hetsu-miya, Munakata Taisha
Hetsu-miya forms the mainland part of Munakata Taisha, the head shrine of approximately 6,200 Munakata shrines throughout Japan and the center of the Munakata faith.
It enshrines Ichikishimahime-no-Kami, one of the Three Goddesses of Munakata.
The grounds also contain Tei-ni-gu and Tei-san-gu, which respectively enshrine Tagorihime-no-Kami of Okitsu-miya and Tagitsuhime-no-Kami of Nakatsu-miya, allowing visitors to pay their respects to all three goddesses on the mainland.
After visiting the main sanctuary and worship hall, follow the tree-lined approach to Takamiya Saijo.
This ancient ceremonial site, where the three goddesses are said to have descended, preserves a form of worship that predates shrine buildings.
If time allows, visit Shimpokan, Munakata Taisha Museum, which houses approximately 80,000 National Treasures excavated on Okinoshima.
The museum offers a deeper understanding of Munakata Taisha’s long connection with maritime travel and the prayers of those who crossed these seas.

Enshrining Tagitsuhime-no-Kami, one of the Three Goddesses of Munakata, the shrine has been cared for by islanders for generations.
It is known for blessings of safe travel and navigation, and its deity is widely revered as a guardian of travelers.
Nakatsu-miya is also known as one of the places associated with the origins of the Tanabata legend of two star-crossed lovers, with Shokujo-sha and Kengyu-sha shrines facing each other across the Amanogawa River, whose name means “Milky Way.”
Around the traditional beginnings of spring and winter, the sun rising over the sea can cast a straight beam along the shrine approach, creating a “Path of Light.”

11:15am|Discover a Maritime Faith at Okitsu-miya Yohaisho

Although visitors cannot travel to Okinoshima, they can visit this place of worship on Oshima.
It was established as a place to offer prayers across the sea to the deity enshrined at Okitsu-miya on sacred Okinoshima.
Access to Okinoshima remains strictly restricted today.
Strict rules have long governed visits to the island, and people have offered prayers toward it from this shore for generations.
The current worship hall was rebuilt in 1933, while a stone monument beside the steps dates from the mid-Edo period and bears an inscription identifying the site as a place to worship Okinoshima.
On particularly clear days, you may be able to make out Okinoshima on the horizon, approximately 50 kilometers away.
Even when the island is out of sight, taking a moment to pray toward the sea offers a sense of the enduring faith preserved here.
