Kuonji is a historic temple standing atop Mount Minobu, a peak rising 1153 meters above sea level. Saint Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism, is enshrined here.

Within the grounds of Kuonji stands a famous weeping Sakura cherry tree, said to be about 400 years old. Every spring, its branches are laden with pale pink cherry blossoms.
From the Sanmon Gate to the Main Hall, there is a steep stairway of 287 steps, called “Boteitei”. This highlight is recommended as a challenge for those who have confidence in their legs and hips.

There is also a ropeway taking you up to the peak of Mount Minobu in about 7 minutes. At the peak, the inner sanctuary may be visited. From the observatory, take in panoramic views of magnificent natural scenery.

Highlights

  • The end of March to the beginning of April is the best time to see the weeping Sakura.
  • For visitors who may have difficulty using the stairs, the elevator is recommended.
  • The famous sweet dumpling, “minobu-dango”, is sold at a souvenir shop at the peak.
