Last update :

This outdoor museum preserves the residential area of the merchants who came to Nagasaki from overseas more than 160 years ago. The Garden stands on a hill overlooking Nagasaki Port, dotted with intriguing places to see.

The highlight is the nine historic buildings. The former Glover residence, where Thomas Blake Glover lived, is designated as a world heritage. He contributed much to Japan's modernization. This oldest existing western-style wooden home in Japan was built in 1863, designed uniquely in a bungalow style. There are other interesting homes such as the former Ringer residence, the typical of the settlement architecture in early Meiji Period, or the former Alt residence with stone columns which is much larger than other western style homes in the same period.

Besides architecture, the Garden has other interesting spots to see - the community water outlet, or the first asphalt roads in Japan. There is a legend that finding a heart-shaped stone buried in the path in the premises will fulfill dreams about your love.
