A vintage Japanese inn featuring a menu of seasonally ripened ingredients and an expansive, 10,000 m2 Japanese garden with gorgeous views all year around.
This inn was original built by the acclaimed western and Japanese-style architect Tatsuno Kingo as an annex to the Shioyu Ryokan inn that once stood in Ohama, in Osaka’s Sakai Ward. Today its nationally designated as a Tangible Cultural Property.
There are 3 types of guestrooms at Nanten-en including Japanese-style rooms, garden-view Japanese rooms and the “seiryutei” detached, specialty room, that opened in 2015. This deluxe, completely private room faces the Amami River and features an all-cypress open air bath. There are 7 garden-view Japanese rooms in total, including the “tsuru” (crane) room where the bowl-shaped pond lays stretched in front of the veranda, the “take” (bamboo) room with more than enough to accommodate two-generation families traveling together, the “horai” room with a sweeping view of the garden that’s designed to imitate the look and feel of the Kongo Mountain range. There are also 6 Japanese rooms including the “hanayagura” (flower turret), “Shinonome” (daybreak), and “Rokkasen” (6 Poets) rooms, popular for their vintage classic aesthetic.
The almost 10,000m2 garden comes alive with cherryblossoms in spring, fireflies in summer, brilliant colors in fall and camellia blooms in winter. Nanten-en, named for the brilliant red buds of the nandina plant is a perfect escape into seasonal beauty and nature that’s only 40 minutes away from Namba in Osaka.
The dinner menu features fresh fare raised in Amami river, artfully crafted and plated by the master chef for you to enjoy. For breakfast you’ll find a delightful spread of nourishing Japanese dishes including broth-rolled egg omelet, fresh-steamed rice and more.
The hot spring got its start in the Nanboku-cho Era, starting as a natural high-alkali spring in the Kawachinagano area. Dip into the large baths for a relaxing time away enclosed in lush greenery.
