Shiogama Port boasts a major catch of tuna in Japan. Their catch of Bigeye tuna is the biggest in Japan. The freshly-caught fish in the nearby sea is brought to Shiogama Seafood Wholesale Market. When you step into the Market, spirited calls will greet you from different directions.
Not only buying products at the Market, but you can also eat lunch. Visitors love My Kaisen Donburi that lets you put the seafood of your liking on a bowl of rice. There is a space to grill the seafood that you just bought, as well as a Shokudo Market that sells food in season. 5 minutes on foot from there, you will reach Shiogama City Fish Market, where you can watch the auction of the tuna just brought from the 2nd floor from around 8am.
On the 3rd Monday in July, Shiogama Minato Festival is held, which is one of Japan’s Three Great Boat Festivals. The marine festival was started to wish for the recovery of Shiogama’s industry and to cheer up the citizens. The portable shrines of Shiwahiko and Shiogama Shrines are loaded onto Gozabune (barge) and sails in Matsushima Bay, followed by stunning 100 decorated boats.
