Tsumugi no Yakata

The facility where you can see, touch and work on Yuki Tsumugi woven the same way as in the ancient days.

Last update :

Tsumugi no Yakata is a facility to share Yuki Tsumugi which is registered as UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage. In the traditional Japanese houses and storages on the premises, Kimono and historical information are displayed and hands-on experience with this luxury fabric are offered.

Yuki Tsumugi is made of hand-spinned silk as warp and weft. This silk fabric traces its roots back to Ashiginu which Hitachi Province used to provide to the imperial court in Nara Period, and is produced just the same traditional way today. The technique with over 40 steps is registered as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. The history and manufacturing process are shared at the Yuki Tsumugi Museum “Teori” on the premises.

There are other vintage homes over 100 years old on the premises - Chinretsu-kan (Display Hall) with more than 200 pieces of Yuki Textile onregular display, or Oriba-kan where you can try making your own coasters with the Takabata weaver. (2,200 yen / reservation required)
