In 1399, Ouchi Yoshihiro was killed in the Oei War. His brother, Morimi, planned to build a pagoda to memorialize Yoshihiro and completed it in 1442.

It is 31.2m-tall, mostly in Japanese style with some Chinese style. Cypress bark is used for the roof and the body of the pagoda becomes slenderer as it goes up for giving it a clean impression. This is one of the superb architecture during mid Muromachi Period and the best of Ouchi culture, which is selected into Japan’s three most distinctive pagodas along with Horyuji and Daigoji Temples.

When the five-layered pagoda and the mountain behind it are reflected on the pond, the scene is exquisite with cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greens in summer, fall foliage, and snowscape in winter.

On its grounds, there is Ruriko-ji Information Hall, where the oldest hand-written copy of Shobogenzo is displayed which explains the teachings of Reverend Dogen, the founder of Soto Sect. You can also see the model of the pagoda’s framework, etc.
