Aosagaura Church
An Important Cultural Property perched on a hilltop on a remote island, celebrating its 100th anniversary of dedication.
Nakadori Island, located approximately 55 kilometers west of Sasebo, is a remote island renowned for its scenic ria coastline. Christianity took root here around the 16th century, and related historical sites remain scattered across the island. Among its numerous churches, the most famous is Aosagaura Church, majestically situated atop a hill where cool ocean breezes gently blow. Its sturdy brick structure was constructed by devoted parishioners, who painstakingly carried bricks on their backs during its building.
Designed by local architect Yosuke Tetsukawa, the church is noted for its beautifully balanced exterior and high vaulted ceilings that showcase elegant curved beams. Sunlight filters softly into the interior through vibrant stained-glass windows. The current structure, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, is the third iteration of the church and celebrated its 100th anniversary of dedication in 2010.
During the Christmas season, the church is illuminated with decorative lights, becoming a beloved winter tradition attracting numerous visitors. Note that photography inside the church is not permitted.
