Okuyuzawa Kaikake Onsen

Counting over 700 years since its opening, Kaikake Onsen has been known for its effectiveness against eye diseases since the Edo period. Tucked away in the lush, mountain-surrounded region of Okuyuzawa, a journey up its steep paths leads to a quaint, lordly-constructed inn that feels like a step back in time—the "Eye Spring" of Okuyuzawa, Kaikake Onsen.

Kaikake Onsen, once even sold as eye medicine, is renowned as an "Eye Spring" for its purported benefits for cataracts, dry eyes, and eye fatigue. With two types of baths heated to 37°C and 42°C, the milder 37°C waters allow for prolonged soaking. Visitors are also encouraged to try "Eye Bathing," scooping up the warm water to bathe their eyes directly. Of course, the onsen also features an open-air bath overflowing with rustic charm, offering a chance to relax both body and mind enveloped by the great outdoors.

The accommodations are housed in a two-story wooden structure, centered around the main building erected in the second year of the Meiji era (1896), with a welcoming entrance hall and detached rooms. Each space exudes the warmth of wood, providing a serene setting to unwind. The dining experience, featuring Niigata's prized Koshihikari rice sourced from contracted local farms, showcases seasonal ingredients in its dishes, complemented by a selection of fine sake from Niigata. The renowned Kaikake Onsen, paired with gourmet food, is sure to soothe both body and soul.
